Bassinet buying guide
Buy a bassinet that meets 16 CFR 1218, incline 10° or less, firm and empty. Bare is best. Compare SNOO on its own page. No SIDS product claim.
We are not pediatricians. This is not medical advice. Your pediatrician knows this baby.
A bassinet is a flat box with a standard. It is not a SIDS-prevention product. Buy one that meets 16 CFR 1218, with an incline of 10 degrees or less, a firm mattress, and a tight sheet. Nothing else in the sleep space. Safe sleep. Bassinet vs crib.
The checklist
- Current US label. Not a travel hammock. Not a “lounge sleeper.”
- Firm. If it feels like a pillow, stop.
- Weight and length limits you can live with for a few months.
- Stands stable on your floor. Mesh sides are visibility, not a safety ranking.
SNOO is a separate, FDA-regulated device with a supine-positioning claim — not a SIDS-reduction claim — and a 2026 warning letter. SNOO vs a regular bassinet. We will not rank “safest bassinet.”
On the registry
This is before-birth item 2. Category pages: Amazon Baby Registry, Target Baby Registry. If you buy through a link we may earn a commission. That does not change the price you pay. We do not publish commission rates.

What we will not do
- A 40-model list
- Inclined, rocking-to-sleep as the plan
- In-bed nests as “bedside”
