Newborn Map
Newborn naps
Newborns nap in short pieces. AAP describes about 16–17 hours in 1–2 hour stretches, not a nap-clock chart. No fake schedule.
We are not pediatricians. This is not medical advice. Your pediatrician knows this baby.
Newborn “naps” are not a preschool timetable. They are the same short sleep as the night, happening in daylight. The AAP describes about 16–17 hours in 24 hours, usually in 1–2 hour stretches — not a chart of “nap 1 at 9:00, nap 2 at 11:30.” We will not print one. See wake windows: AAP does not publish those either.
How many / how short
There is no official nap count for week 2. Some days look like six scraps. Some look like two slightly longer chunks plus a pile of contact. That is still newborn sleep, not a failed routine.
Protect the surface, not the interval: back, firm, flat, empty. A car-seat nap in the house is not the plan. Safe sleep.
Day vs night
Make days brighter and nights boring so the scraps start to lean. Day-night confusion. Night feeds stay. Feeding.
What we will not do
- A 0–6 week nap clock
- “Overtired” as a lab value
- Sleep training in the first 90 days — that page is HOLD
- A product that “lengthens naps” as a SIDS or medical claim
When to call
A baby who will not wake to eat is not “a good napper.” 100.4°F under 3 months; breathing that looks like work; you are not safe — 988, 1-833-TLC-MAMA.
