The first 90 days registry — buy, wait, or skip
A 22-item first-90-days baby registry and 12 skips. Buy before birth, week 1–2, wait list, and CPSC/AAP safe-sleep floor. Interactive checklist included.
We are not pediatricians. This is not medical advice. Your pediatrician knows this baby.
If you buy through a link we may earn a commission. That does not change the price you pay. We do not publish commission rates. Outbound retailer links on this page are category pages — Amazon Baby Registry, Target Baby Registry, Hatch, Ergobaby — not SKUs, not prices.
The 90-day rule
If it does not help you feed, sleep safely, leave the hospital legally, or keep the baby clean and a temperature you can measure, it does not need to be on the registry yet.
That is 22 use-items: 10 before birth and 12 in week 1–2. Everything else is wait or skip. The skip list is not taste. It is CPSC and AAP.
The interactive checklist below the tables remembers checkboxes in this browser. Print it when you want a paper copy.
Safe-sleep floor (non-negotiable)
Back. Firm. Flat. Empty. Room-share. One CPSC-compliant bassinet or crib is enough. No incline over 10°. No bumpers, weighted sacks, positioners, loungers-as-beds, or nests. Read what to skip and safe sleep.
A SNOO is not “the safest bassinet.” It is an FDA-regulated device with a specific claim — supine positioning — and a required warning that it has not directly demonstrated a reduction in SIDS/SUID. See SNOO vs a regular bassinet.
How to build the registry
- Open one retailer registry, or two if you want split gifts. Category homepages: Amazon Baby Registry and Target Baby Registry.
- Add the 10 before-birth items first. Then stop. Week 1–2 items can wait until you know size, spit-up volume, and whether you are actually using bottles.
- Put the skip list in the notes, or send relatives what to skip.
- Optional category browse, not a must: Hatch for a sound machine, Ergobaby for a carrier. Those are brands in a category, not a ranking.
Do not add Owlet. Do not add inclined sleepers. Do not add a second sleep product “for downstairs.”
Buy before birth (10)
| # | Item | Why it is on the list |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rear-facing car seat, installed before discharge | You cannot leave without one. Infant bucket or convertible from day one. Car seat. |
| 2 | CPSC-compliant bassinet or crib + firm mattress | One flat sleep space. Safe sleep. |
| 3 | 2–3 tight fitted sheets | They must not bunch. No quilt. |
| 4 | Digital thermometer | Rectal is the standard for young infants. 100.4°F under 3 months is a call. |
| 5 | Starter diapers + unscented wipes | A couple of weeks. Newborn and size 1. |
| 6 | 6–8 sleepers in newborn and 0–3 | Zippers. Not a wardrobe. |
| 7 | Feeding kit for the plan you actually have | Formula + bottles, or 1–2 bottles if breastfeeding. Feeding. |
| 8 | Washcloths and a sink or infant-tub plan | Sponge baths until the cord is off. |
| 9 | A pediatrician who can see you 1–3 days after discharge | Book before labor if you can. Bringing baby home. |
| 10 | Non-weighted wearable blanket or swaddle you know how to use | Empty crib is the floor. Stop swaddling when rolling starts. |
Buy in week 1–2 (12)
| # | Item | Why it can wait until you are home |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Extra fitted sheets | You will learn the laundry volume. |
| 2 | Next-size diapers once you know what fits | Many babies leave newborn quickly. |
| 3 | Saline drops and a nasal aspirator | Newborns are nose-breathers. |
| 4 | Nail file or baby clippers | File while they sleep. |
| 5 | Extra sleepers | Add what you are actually washing. |
| 6 | Pacifiers if you choose them | AAP: once feeding is going, for sleep. Not required. |
| 7 | Soft-structured carrier or wrap with newborn fit | Hands-free holding. Category: Ergobaby. |
| 8 | Optional sound machine | Not a medical device. Keep it out of the crib. Category: Hatch. |
| 9 | Burp cloths | Flour-sack towels work. |
| 10 | A simple changing pad | Floor or dresser. Not a furniture project. |
| 11 | Fragrance-free laundry detergent | Wash the sleepers. |
| 12 | Slow-flow bottles if you are combo- or formula-feeding | Two or three. Combo feeding. |
Wait
High chair, full travel system, play gym, clothes past the next size, diaper pail, bottle warmer, glider-and-ottoman, extra cameras, nursing pillow, activity center. None of these are week-zero problems. Check them on the tool if you want a reminder to not buy them yet.
Skip (12)
Full reasons: what to skip.
| # | Skip | In one line |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Inclined sleepers (>10°) | CPSC banned. Flat only. |
| 2 | Crib bumpers | AAP/CPSC: no. |
| 3 | Weighted sleep sacks or blankets | AAP advises against. |
| 4 | Positioners and wedges | FDA/AAP: do not use. |
| 5 | Loungers / docks / nests as beds | CPSC warnings and recalls. |
| 6 | In-bed nests and non-standard sleepers | Not the CPSC floor. |
| 7 | Crib bedding sets | Fitted sheet only. |
| 8 | Wipe warmer | Wipes work cold. |
| 9 | Bottle sterilizer as a must-have | Soap and water; sterilize when your clinician says so. |
| 10 | Newborn shoes | They do not walk. |
| 11 | Infant walkers | AAP recommends against. |
| 12 | Owlet (or any pulse-ox) as safe sleep | Not a SIDS strategy. We do not recommend it. |
Money
You do not need a matching nursery to leave the hospital. The expensive items that actually matter are the car seat and a legal sleep space. Everything else on the 22 is consumable or cheap.
If money is tight:
- Ask the hospital social worker about car-seat programs and WIC / local diaper banks.
- A play yard that meets current standards can be the sleep space if your clinician is fine with the model and you use it as designed.
- Formula costs are a feeding-plan conversation, not a registry aesthetic. CDC and your pediatrician, not a brand ranking here.
- We will not tell you a SNOO rental is a safety upgrade. Price check only, on the SNOO page: advertised rent is often about $159/month plus a reconditioning fee around $99.50, versus about $1,695 to buy, versus a regular CPSC bassinet that costs a small fraction of that.
No fake SKU prices. No invented commission rates. Category links only.
What we will not put on this registry
- Owlet or other consumer pulse-ox products
- Weighted sleep gear
- Inclined sleepers
- “SIDS-safe” anything
- A week-by-week product calendar
- A live email list. If you want a note when we update the 22, use the disabled notify control in the footer or email the owner. There is no list to join today.
When to call
Registry stress is not an emergency. These are:
- 100.4°F (38°C) under 3 months
- Breathing that looks like work, a baby you cannot wake, jaundice that worries you
- You are not safe — 988, 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262), PSI
