Hospital bag vs the first week at home
Pack light. The car seat and a flat sleep surface matter more than a cute bag. What you actually use in week one lives on the 22-item registry.
We are not pediatricians. This is not medical advice. Your pediatrician knows this baby.
A hospital bag is a weekend duffel. The first week at home is a 22-item list. Do not confuse them. The car seat and a CPSC sleep surface matter more than matching swaddle sets in a tote.
Pack (the bag)
- ID, insurance card, birth plan if you have one
- Phone charger
- Clothes you will actually sit in
- Snacks
- Going-home outfit that is one layer more than a comfortable adult — no puffy coat under the harness
- Car seat, installed before discharge. Bringing baby home.
You do not need a mini pharmacy. The ward has the basics.
Actually use (week one)
From the registry, before-birth ten: seat, sleep space, sheets, thermometer, starter diapers, sleepers, feeding kit for the plan you have, washcloths, a pediatrician who can see you 1–3 days after discharge, a non-weighted wearable layer you understand.
Skip the cute bag fillers: wipe warmer, newborn shoes, bedding set. What to skip.
Money
If someone wants to buy you a “hospital bag kit,” point them at diapers or the Amazon / Target registry instead. If you buy through a link we may earn a commission. That does not change the price you pay. We do not publish commission rates.
