Formula prep and storage

CDC prep steps. Infants under 2 months: boil water about 5 minutes for powdered formula (Cronobacter). Never microwave. No extra water. No homemade formula.

We are not pediatricians. This is not medical advice. Your pediatrician knows this baby.

Powdered formula is not sterile. CDC publishes the steps. We will not invent extra ones, and we will not write a homemade-formula recipe.

The floor

  • Wash hands. Clean bottles. CDC cleaning: soap and water; extra sanitizing when your clinician says so.
  • Use the scoop that came with this can. Level it. Do not pack. Do not add “a little extra water” to stretch. Watered-down formula is a medical problem.
  • Follow the can for ounces of water to powder. Ready-to-feed is already mixed.
  • Never microwave formula. Hot spots burn mouths. Warm a bottle in a cup of warm water if you warm at all.
  • Throw out what they did not finish in the time the can / CDC says. Do not refrigerate half-drunk bottles for later.

Cronobacter and babies under 2 months

CDC and FDA treat Cronobacter as a reason to be careful with powdered formula in the youngest infants. Public CDC teaching for powdered formula, especially under 2 months (and for preterm or immunocompromised babies): boil water for about 5 minutes, let it cool enough that it will not scald, then mix. Your pediatrician can tell you if this baby should use ready-to-feed instead. We will not turn that into a brand ranking.

Storage

Use prepared bottles in the window CDC and the label give you. Refrigerator times are on those pages — we will not invent a third number. Travel: insulated bag, then use or dump. How much formula.

What we will not do

  • Homemade formula
  • Goat milk, evaporated milk, or toddler drink as infant formula
  • A sterilizer as a must-have. What to skip.

When to call

Fever under 3 months; bloody stool; a baby who will not wake; you used the wrong mix and you are scared — call the pediatrician or poison control as they direct. Do not wait on a forum.
