You need newborn and size 1, unscented wipes, and a place to throw them. You do not need twelve boxes of one size or a “best diapers 2026” list. Many babies leave newborn sizing fast. Buy a starter, then the size that actually fits. Registry.
The setup
- A couple of weeks of diapers, not a year
- Wipes at room temperature. Skip the wipe warmer. What to skip.
- A changing pad on a dresser or the floor. Not a furniture project.
- Cream if your clinician named one. We will not rank rash protocols.
Cloth vs disposable is a household choice. Both can be fine. We will not moralize.
Poop and the cord
Fold the diaper below the stump. Umbilical. Color questions that are pale, clay, or bloody are a call — newborn poop is HOLD.
