Used baby gear: what’s safe
Unknown-history car seats are a no. Drop-side cribs are banned. Recalled inclined sleepers go in the trash. No Marketplace SNOO.

Used can be fine: cotton sleepers, a current-standard crib you can identify, a play yard with all the parts. Used is a no when you cannot interrogate the history. What to skip. CPSC recalls.
Car seats
Unknown-history car seats = no. If you cannot confirm it was never in a crash, is not expired, has the label and instructions, and has every piece, you do not install it. Resale apps are a bad historian. First infant car seat. NHTSA.
Cribs and sleepers
- Drop-side cribs are banned. Do not use one.
- Recalled inclined sleepers are trash, not a hand-me-down. CPSC.
- Nests, docks, loungers-as-beds: skip.
- A crib must meet current CPSC standards, no missing hardware.
No Marketplace SNOO
A used or refurbished SNOO from a stranger is not a bargain hunt. FDA’s June 15, 2026 letter flagged refurbished hygiene (stains, soiling, mold reports). Read SNOO vs a regular bassinet. Buy a regular CPSC bassinet if you need a flat space.
What can pass
Sleepers, books, a high chair you will not need yet, toys they cannot chew the paint off — still check recalls. When in doubt, skip.
