Tummy time

Tummy time is supervised and awake. AAP: work toward 15–30 minutes total daily by about 7 weeks. Never stomach-down for naps or nights.

We are not pediatricians. This is not medical advice. Your pediatrician knows this baby.

Tummy time is awake and watched, on your chest or a firm, clear floor. It is not a nap position. Sleep is still on the back. Safe sleep. AAP: back to sleep, tummy to play.

How much

AAP teaching works toward about 15–30 minutes total per day by around 7 weeks, in short scraps — not a 30-minute plank on day 3. In the first 72 hours this can be a minute or two. Bringing baby home.

Stop if they fall asleep. Move to the flat, empty surface on the back.

What you need

A clean floor or your chest. Not a lounger, not a nest, not a “tummy-time pillow” in a crib. What to skip.

What we will not do

  • A week-by-week minute chart
  • A gadget ranking
  • Permission to stomach-nap “since they like it”

When to call

If the neck always looks stuck one way, if you see breathing that scares you during play, if they cannot lift off the floor in a way that worries your clinician — ask at the first visit. Fever and sleepiness are not tummy-time questions.
